Wild Berries May Be Boosting The Effects Of Cancer Medicine
Haley Crigler
A new study on a wild berry called "chokeberry" has shown that when eating these berries (or foods/beverages containing the extract), they may prevent the formation of new blood vessels, which is critical in the process of cancer cell growth.
Chokeberry is berry that grows on the Eastern portion of the United States in different wet lands, especially swamps. This berry is high in vitamins and antioxidants including different polyphenols. Polyphenols are believed to mop up the harmful by-products of normal cell activities. This berry seems extremely helpful in the treatment of pancreatic cancer, but it did cause some healthy cell deaths which can be extremely dangerous to those with pancreatic cancer.
Scientists decided to do their research on this berry on pancreatic cancer cells because of its persistent effects. Less than 5% of the patients that are diagnosed with this cancer are alive five years later.
Putting this berry with cancer medications suggest that when they are put together, the extract exerts "supra-additive" effect.
Scientists put cells from a cancerous pancreas into a petri dish along with cancer medication and the berry extract. Together, the berry extract and medication removed most of the cancer, but not all. If more research is done, it is possible that scientists will be able to create a medication that will fight cancer, and hopefully defeat it.
Statistically speaking, the toxicity of the chokeberry on normal cell lining had no effects when tested, even on the highest level of usage (about 50 ug/ml). This can take the 5% of cancer patients that survive more than five years after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, higher. With this results, it can be estimated that this 5% will turn into about 20-40% higher.
